COP26 is the latest event to be postponed amid the coronavirus crisis.
The UN climate change talks were due to take place in Glasgow, Scotland in November (2020), but will now take place in October 2021, the UN climate change body UNFCC announced this week.
In a statement, UNFCC said the postponement would better enable all parties to focus on important climate issues while allowing more preparation time.
“The world is currently facing an unprecedented global challenge and countries are rightly focusing their efforts on saving lives and fighting Covid-19,” said COP26 President-Designate and the UK’s Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy Alok Sharma.
