French aluminium product producer Constellium plans to move forward with industrial testing of using hydrogen in its casthouses following lab-scale tests in 2022.
During the 2022 trials, the company’s main R&D centre C-TEC said it was able to demonstrate transitioning from natural gas to hydrogen had “no adverse effects” on energy efficiency, oxidation rate or product quality.
For the industrial tests, C-TEC has equipped a furnace with a burner capable of operating with oxygen and both natural gas “and/or” hydrogen, with the first results expected in Q3 this year (2024).
