CMB.TECH and Tsuneishi JV opens hydrogen ICE R&D centre in Japan

Hydrogen engine technology joint venture (JV) JPNH2YDRO has opened a new R&D centre in Japan to advance internal combustion engine (ICE) development.

Equipped with an engine test bench and hydrogen refuelling station for ships, the CMB.TECH, Tsuneishi Facilities & Craft and Kambara Kisen JV site will focus on developing hydrogen engines for ships and heavy-duty road vehicles.

Once fully developed, the engines will be installed into Tsuneishi vessels, the JV said.

“The launch of this R&D Centre marks a significant step forward in Japan’s hydrogen engine development.

“It will also be a key hub for the homologation and approval of hydrogen dual fuel engines for the Japanese market, reinforcing JPNH2YDRO’s position in the push toward cleaner energy solution,” the company said.

Launched in 2021, JPNH2YDRO plans to develop hydrogen ICE technology for Japanese industrial and marine market.

Planning to use CMB.TECH’s experience in developing dual-fuel hydrogen engines, the CMB and Tsuneishi launched a dual-fuel hydrogen ferry in Japan.

Speaking to H2 View earlier this year, Roy Campe, CMB.TECH’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO), said the dual-fuel technology offers a flexible route for vessel operators to cut emissions.
