CHIP targets key hydrogen technologies with three new projects

The Carbon Trust’s Clean Hydrogen Innovation Programme (CHIP) has launched three projects to address essential technology groups within the hydrogen supply chain.

The first initiative, led by HyEnergy and HIVE Hydrogen, will evaluate hydrogen compressors available in the UK market, comparing the cost and performance of existing technologies, including ones from international markets.

ERM will study hydrogen purification as part of a cost-benefit analysis. They will explore purity requirements across various points of the supply chain and assess how current and near-market technologies can meet these demands and at what cost.

Finally, Optimat and Wood will analyse the trade-offs between using tube trailers and pipelines for hydrogen distribution and evaluate the commercial viability of onsite buffer storage options, such as compressed gas storage tanks.

These projects form part of CHIP’s 2023 Innovation Needs Assessment, which identified and prioritised innovation needs for technologies across the hydrogen industry.

The programme was established in 2023 by the Carbon Trust in collaboration with Levidian, National Gas Transmission, Scottish Power and SSE, and is also supported by the UK Government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.

Andrew Lever, Director for Energy Transition at the Carbon Trust, said, “Our work in collaboration with our industry partners and innovators will help to de-risk future projects, enabling the next wave of clean hydrogen development and supporting the UK’s commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions.”

Yesterday (September 26), Wales & West Utilities (WWU) announced it would begin work on two hydrogen projects designed to assess how the south west region can be harnessed to deliver a low-carbon network through hydrogen.
