China’s ‘first’ operating hydrogen engine proved a success in demonstration project

Clean engine developments in China have taken a major step forward, with China Yuchai International stating that its YCK05 hydrogen-powered engine has achieved stable ignition and operation in a recent demonstration project.

Believed to be China’s first operating hydrogen engine, the development adopts a number of advanced technologies such as high-pressure multi-point inlet air injection, high-efficiency low-inertia turbocharging, high-efficiency lean burn combustion and more.

To develop the YCK05, China Yuchai teamed up with the Beijing Institute of Technology, at which the recent demonstration project was held and scientific research cooperation has been carried out.

Through the key partnership, it is hoped the engine will be widely application in bus, municipal, sanitation, logistics and distribution markets as the country aims to cut emissions related to transportation.
