Chart to support the development of Energy Observer 2

Chart Industries has joined the project Energy Observer 2, which aims to address maritime decarbonisation challenges through liquid hydrogen solutions.

Through Energy Observer’s subsidiary, EOConcept, Chart agreed to provide its experience in the clean energy and industrial gas markets, joining Accor and Air Liquide on the flagship project.

The €100m ($108.5m) initiative will evaluate the development of a liquid hydrogen-powered ship that has the ambition to become the lowest carbon-emitting cargo vessel in the world. Its strategy is aligned with the revised strategy of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) and the EU’s ‘Fit for 55’ legislative package.

LMG Marin has supported the feasibility studies for the design of Energy Observer 2, which will be capable of transporting 1,100 TEU containers over 1,800 miles with an autonomy of 14 days. The 160-metre-long ship uses electric propulsion powered by 4.8MW fuel cell systems supplied by EODev and Toyota.

“The extensive cryogenic expertise and experience of Chart, combined with our recognised track record in providing liquefaction technologies, liquid hydrogen tanks, and solutions across various sectors, make us the ideal partner to turn this groundbreaking project into a reality,” explained Jill Evanko, President and CEO of Chart.

Energy Observer’s Founder and President, Victorien Erussard, added, “The multiple industrial solutions of Chart represent a major asset, reinforcing our motivation to push the boundaries of technological exploration for the decarbonisation of the maritime sector.

“The goal is to build a benchmark hydrogen port ecosystem and reduce the overall cost of liquid hydrogen to promote its adoption in maritime transport, particularly for certain types of flows and distances to be covered.”

Last month (May), the Energy Observer made its final stop in Boston, the US, before its return to Saint-Malo, France. Throughout 2023, the vessel made stops in Africa and South America, before its final voyage to North America.
