CFE doubles order for GenCell’s hydrogen back-up systems

The Mexican Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) has doubled its order of hydrogen-fuelled back-up power solutions from GenCell Energy, part of the tender won in December 2023.

The state-owned utility will deploy the GenCell REX units across the country, accompanied by GenCell GEMS AI-driven energy management software to provide backup power to CFE’s substations that operate immediately during grid outages.

The CFE previously ordered $4.5m worth of hydrogen back-up power systems from the Israeli-based company in December (2024), and they have now decided to execute the option to double this.
