Canada supports clean hydrogen initiatives with $9.14m funding round

Natural Resources Canada has awarded up to CAD $9.14m ($6.7m) to six projects supporting the country’s clean hydrogen sector.

Enbridge Gas secured C$5m to conduct a hydrogen blending study, assessing the feasibility of a hydrogen network. Trans Québec & Maritimes Pipeline will use C$1.4m to also assess hydrogen blending of up to 10% on their existing natural gas transmission system.

The University of British Columbia (UBC) will receive C$1.25m to develop a pilot hydrogen pyrolysis plant, whilst Ayrton Energy was awarded C$1.09m to evaluate hydrogen storage and transportation in conventional tanks, trucks and pipelines, with help from Alberta Innovates’ Hydrogen Centre of Excellence.

Enbridge Gas also secured just under C$1m to demonstrate the use of existing wind and solar assets within Ontario to produce hydrogen. Hydrogen in Motion received the smallest fee, with C$590,223 to generate clean hydrogen via solid-state storage, distribution and transport.

Of the total funding, C$2.74m, was allocated via the Energy Innovation Programme.

“Canadian businesses have the ambition and drive to provide clean energy solutions and become the supplier of choice in a Net Zero world,” explained Jonathan Wilkinson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources.

“This is especially true when we see the progress being made throughout the hydrogen value chain and across the regions to advance Canada’s growing hydrogen sector.”

Joyce Murray, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Quadra, claimed UBC’s project will be a “key player in the clean technology ecosystem in Canada.”

Murray added that the federal government is “pleased to support investment in local energy leaders who are carving the path to a Net Zero future.”

In June (2024), Canada passed clean hydrogen investment tax credits into law. The CAD $5.6bn Clean Hydrogen Investment Tax Credit (ITC) offers between 15 and 40% of the investments for eligible hydrogen projects.
