A Canadian start-up has announced plans to help a pulp mill in British Columbia decarbonise its operations with by-product hydrogen.
Teralta plans to sell “waste hydrogen” from Chemtrade’s sodium chlorate production in Prince George to CANFOR Pulp’s nearby mill, displacing natural gas currently used in its heating system.
According to the start-up, the project would provide the mill with up to 500,000 gigajoules (138.9GWh) of hydrogen per year, reducing its natural gas consumption by 25% – which it believes would eliminate over 700,000 tonnes of CO2 over 20 years.
