Blue hydrogen will still account for 12% of the total hydrogen demand by 2050, a panel at the Hydrogen Technology Expo in Hamburg, Germany, has heard.
Magnus Killingland, Global Segment Lead Hydrogen at DNV, explained that there are around 400 hydrogen plants in Europe and a third of these are based around refining.
“They use a lot of natural gas, so if you want to decarbonise those, you have to retrofit them with carbon capture,” he said. “When we forecast the energy transition outlook from our research team, we see that will be around three million tonnes per year in 2050.
