European and Japanese policymakers could import large volumes of blue hydrogen that exceeds regulatory carbon intensity thresholds, according to a new report.
The Green Hydrogen Organisation (GH2) and Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI) report has warned that if policymakers don’t enact robust emissions accounting systems for hydrogen, they could “seriously jeopardise” 2050 climate goals.
Methodologies established by “first mover hydrogen markets,” such as the EU, UK, US, Japan and South Korea, are at risk of undercounting actual emissions when importing blue hydrogen, the report finds.
