California-based clean energy company Bloom Energy has partnered with Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI), part of the Samsung Group, to collaboratively design and develop ships powered by Bloom Energy’s solid oxide fuel cell technology.
Through the partnership, SHI aims to be the first shipbuilder to deliver large cargo ships that are powered by fuel cells running on natural gas.
The company’s decision to switch to fuel cells will help them achieve the 50% emissions reduction target, compared to 2008 levels, that the International Maritime Organisation set for all shipbuilders to achieve by 2050.
