Berlin approves import strategy to meet up to 70% of 2030 hydrogen demand

Berlin has approved Germany’s hydrogen import strategy to bring up to 2.73 million tonnes of low-carbon hydrogen into the country by 2030.

As noted in its updated overarching hydrogen strategy in 2023, the German Government expects 50-70% of its 2030 95-130TWh hydrogen demand to be met by imports, representing up to 2.3 million tonnes.

Aiming to ensure that the nation can meet its import needs, the strategy supports pure hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, naphtha and other carriers such as liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC).
