BASF German PEM electrolyser plant enters construction phase

BASF’s PEM electrolyser plant at Ludwigshafen is now entering the construction phase after receiving federal funding.

In a statement, BASF – which is partnering with Siemens Energy – said it had received approval for the Hy4Chem-EI project from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (€124.3m) and the State of Rhineland-Palatinate (€37.3m).

Dr. Franziska Brantner, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, presented the official notification to Dr. Melanie Maas-Brunner, member of the Board of Executive Directors of BASF SE and Site Director Ludwigshafen, in the presence of Malu Dreyer, Minister-President of Rhineland-Palatinate.

With an output of 54MW and capacity of up to 8,000MT of hydrogen per year, the PEM electrolyser facility will be one of the largest of its kind in Germany once the water electrolysis plant becomes operational in 2025.
