Ballard sets out to reduce bipolar plate costs by 70%

Ballard Power Systems has announced plans to reduce the costs and scale production capacity of its next generation graphite bipolar plates for hydrogen fuel cells.

As one of the highest cost components in a fuel cell stack, Ballard has said the new plans could result in cost savings of up to 70% by integrating next generation plate manufacturing processes and lower cost material suppliers.

With commissioning expected in late 2025, the Canadian company anticipates its plate manufacturing capacity to increase by a factor of 10, while also improving graphite and resin material yield, reducing production times.
