Ballard expands MEA production to meet growing FCEV demand

In order to meet the expected growth in fuel cell electric vehicle demand, Ballard Power Systems is expanding its manufacturing capacity for the production of its membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) by six times at its headquarters in Vancouver.

To be complete by early 2021, the upgraded capacity for production of six million MEAs annually, equivalent to approximately 1.66-gigawatts of product, will make the Ballard facility the largest fuel cell MEA production operation globally for commercial vehicles.

“With competition of this expansion programme planned for early 2021, we will be providing a review of our production capacity expansion, including a video overview, during our upcoming virtual Investor and Analyst Day 2020 on 29th September.”
