Ballard Power Systems and Vertiv have agreed to focus on the development of backup power applications for data centres and critical infrastructures, scalable from 200kW to multiple MWs.
Ballard fuel cell modules have been integrated into Vertiv’s Liebert® EXL S1 uninterruptible power system (UPS). Two of Ballard’s 200kW fuel cell cabinets were used in a demonstration of Vertiv’s Power Module H2 solution at their US facility in Delaware, Ohio.
At the facility, they successfully demonstrated proof of concept (POC) for the solution, which encompasses hydrogen storage infrastructure integrated with Vertiv’s HPL lithium-ion batteries.
The initial validations and tests have demonstrated successful operation of zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emission backup power integrated into an uninterruptable power architecture. The two companies will now focus on its distribution in North America and Europe, along with selected opportunities in other geographies.
