Hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2ICEs) are at the heart of a new collaboration between AVL and SuperTurbo Technologies, as the duo explore the benefits of applying a mechanically driven turbocharger drive unit to a 13-litre engine with hydrogen combustion.
A hot topic is the hydrogen space right now, H2ICEs hold both massive potential when it comes to decarbonising several mobility applications and can also present a competitive edge to fuel cell manufacturers to increase efficiency.
Here, AVL and SuperTurbo Technologies will focus on a high-speed traction unit, dubbed SuperTurbo, an on-demand air device that can be used to control the speed of turbomachinery independently of the engine’s exhaust flow and vary the ratio between engine speed and turbo speed.
