Avina completes FEED phase on 800,000 tonne clean ammonia facility

Avina Clean Hydrogen has completed the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and Front-End-Loading (FEL-3) for its clean ammonia facility in Texas, US.

With a Final Investment Decision (FID) expected this year, the latest milestone represents the “first” announced the completion of FEED for a large-scale clean ammonia facility in the US.

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) led the overall FEED effort for the 800,000 tonnes per year facility, whilst EXCEL led the constructability effort, leveraging their experience in executing similar ammonia plants in the Texas Gulf Coast region.

Additionally, KBR previously helped secure the Basic Engineering Design (BED) package for the plant and they continued to support design activities to reach the FEED milestone.

H2 View understands that the plant, set to become operational in 2028, will produce 2,200 tonnes of ammonia per day, adhering to Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO) standards and aligning with EU guidelines.

Furthermore, the facility, which will benefit from natural gas and carbon sequestration infrastructure in the Texas Gulf Coast, will integrate up to 280 tonnes per day of blue hydrogen to produce up to 600,000 tonnes of blue ammonia.

The FEED process also included close collaboration with electrolyser manufacturers and renewable energy suppliers.

Long-term water supply agreements have already been agreed with the local water district, whilst Avina will also take advantage of the region’s pipeline networks, storage and terminal facilities.

Avina’s Founder and CEO, Vishal Shah, claimed the completion of the facility will create several hundred high-paying jobs and make the US “a dominant producer of next-generation fuels.”

Derek M Shah, Senior Vice-President and Head at L&T Energy Green, added, “Our integrated capabilities and proven track record in top-tier project management, advanced design and engineering, along with world-class modular fabrication expertise, will ensure the highest standards of execution for this landmark project.”

Last November, Avina broke ground on its green hydrogen production and refuelling facility in southern California, which is anticipated to become operational this year.
