Small modular electrolyser solutions may help overcome green hydrogen cost and adoption barriers, according to a Rotork whitepaper.
More flexible and cost-effective solutions – like modularised electrolysers – are needed to scale production and develop offtake agreements while larger-scale projects lag.
The paper, hosted on h2-view.com, says that smaller-scale and modular routes could become more common, as companies look to spread the cost of adoption – with the technology being easier to transport, construct and install than large-scale plants.
However, despite those benefits, it warns that there are issues around safety and efficiency to be considered to ensure the success of smaller-scale systems.
“To be successful they must be safe, flexible and easily integrated into existing processes,” the paper reads – with automation and monitoring key to integrating electrolyser systems with existing processes.
As part of that, actuation technology plays a critical role in automating and controlling various mechanical and fluidic processes within electrolysers.
Managing functions like gas and liquid flow, pressure regulation, temperature management and valve control, the paper says electric actuators can enhance safety, process efficiency, and reduce emissions.
With a tailored maintenance programme, operators can increase asset availability and reliability while reducing downtime. Some electric actuators have a wide range of specifications to support easy integration and compatibility with a plant’s systems.
Data is also an integral element of electric actuators, with some including a data logger, which can feed information on the performance of valves to a common control point.
“By introducing solutions that prioritise efficiency and reliability, customers can streamline their operations, reduce overall expenses and mitigate potential risks associated with system integration and performance,” the paper stresses.
