Austrian project to harness summer green hydrogen for winter heat and power

INNIO Group’s pilot 1MW project will generate heat and power this winter using green hydrogen produced during the summer and stored underground.

The hydrogen combined heat and power (CHP) plant will be powered by hydrogen at RAG Austria’s Underground Sun Storage 2030 project, located in a porous reservoir in Rubensdorf, near Gampern.

The facility is expected to hold up to 4.2 GWh of surplus solar power in the form of hydrogen. The electricity and heat generated at the Jenbacher CHP plant will be used for the site’s local requirements.

The engine developer INNIO first announced it would deliver the Jenbacher plant to RAG last November (2023). The two companies are “demonstrating how the decarbonisation of communities and industrial sites is possible,” according to Dr. Andreas Kunz, INNIO Group’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO).

Markus Mitteregger, CEO of RAG Austria, added, “With the help of Jenbacher technology, we are able to decouple the generation of renewable energy from its consumption, thus enabling sustainable security of supply all year round.”

In October 2023, INNIO secured a Hydrogen-Readiness certificate from TÜD SÜD for its Jenbacher Type 4 and 6 hydrogen product line, and its associated concept to run power plants on 100% hydrogen.

In the UK, Essar Energy Transition (EET) plan to develop a 125MW hydrogen CHP plant, which would be located at the Stanlow refinery in Ellesmere Port.

The plant is anticipated to reach a 6,000 tonne-per-day capacity and reduce up to 740,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
