Aramco will use Topsoe technology to produce blue hydrogen at its natural gas liquids (NGL) recovery plant in Saudi Arabia.
Under a Joint Development Agreement (JDA), the two companies will deploy a 3MW unit that is expected to produce around six tonnes of blue hydrogen per day.
Denmark’s Topsoe will supply its eREACT technology to the Shaybah facility, where it will be integrated with Aramco’s resources. The Saudi firm will also showcase its palladium-alloy membrane technology, enabling blue hydrogen production with simultaneous CO2 capture.
Topsoe’s versatile eREACT solution uses electrified reactors to produce low-carbon hydrogen and fuels. It combines renewable electricity and natural gas while reportedly reducing emissions by up to 30%.
H2 View understands that the technology’s potential further increases if the process is combined with carbon capture and storage (CCS), which Aramco will provide.
“We are excited to strengthen our collaboration with Aramco further,” said Elena Scaltritti, Chief Commerical Officer (CCO). “With this JDA, we are demonstrating the significant commercial viability of our eREACT technology and its benefits to low-carbon hydrogen production.
“This technology holds significant potential as part of the low-carbon hydrogen economy, and we are excited to deliver on the project in due course.”

Ali Meshari, Aramco’s Senior Vice President of Technology Oversight and Coordination, added, “Our collaboration will bring together the expertise of our two companies in attempting to create a cutting-edge technology solution to develop a lower carbon hydrogen production technology from hydrocarbons.
“By leveraging Aramco’s oil and gas infrastructure and abundantly available renewable resources in the Kingdom, we plan to enable the commercial deployment of this novel technology.”
