Ånge to host Sweden’s first hydrogen cluster with green fertiliser initiative

Lhyfe has partnered with OX2 and Velarion to create a hydrogen cluster in Ånge, Sweden, combining renewable power with large-scale hydrogen production.

OX2, one of Europe’s largest onshore wind developers, is developing a wind farm in Marktjärn that has a planned annual production capacity of 1.4TWh. H2 View understands that this project will power Lhyfe’s 300MW hydrogen production unit planned nearby in Torpshammar.

In addition to this, green fertiliser company Velarion will construct the “world’s first” carbon-neutral fertiliser plants within the cluster, which will use the produced hydrogen to create renewable ammonia for fertilisers.

This project is currently in its conceptual phase, and implementation will depend on the conclusions of the study being carried out, the granting of operating licenses and environmental permits, and financial investment decisions (FID).

Anders Nilsson, Head of Onshore Wind at OX2, said the partnership will enable “sustainable local industry and enhance the attractiveness for further industrial establishments in Ånge.”

Lhyfe’s Country Manager for Sweden, Sara Wihlborg, added, “Due to the large potential production capacity, we are in dialogue with several companies that aim to refine hydrogen and its by-products.” The 300MW hydrogen production unit could produce up to 100 tonnes per day of green hydrogen.

Wihlborg added, “These collaborations will help build a local ecosystem that contributes to the region’s economy and job creation.”

In June (2024), the French company announced it had received a grant of up to $11.9m to develop a local renewable hydrogen production plant in Trelleborg, Sweden.
