Amara Raja Infra has unveiled India’s “first” hydrogen refuelling station in Leh, Ladakh, marking a significant milestone in supporting NTPC’s fuel cell-powered bus initiative.
H2 View understands that the facility will be capable of distributing 80kg of green hydrogen per day. It has been completed after two years of development, experiencing “multiple challenges” according to the Amra Raja Group company.
“Here’s to taking a significant step towards advancing India’s green mobility goals and a sustainable future powered by Amara Raja,” the Indian company wrote on LinkedIn.
Indian power utility NTPC will use the station to fuel five of the hydrogen-powered buses it is trialling in the city. Last year, the firm put Leh’s initial fuel cell bus into operation as part of a three-month field trial.

This initiative aligns with the broader vision outlined by Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, who, during an international conference in September, emphasised the need to accelerate the adoption of green hydrogen in public transportation.
He said, “In such a crucial sector, it is important for domain experts to lead the way and work together. Particularly, I urge the global scientific community to come together to explore various aspects. Scientists and innovators can suggest changes in public policy to help the green hydrogen sector.
