Algerian green hydrogen project to boost European imports via SouthH2 Corridor

Five energy-focused companies will explore the feasibility of an integrated green hydrogen project in Algeria designed to provide imports via the SouthH2 Corridor.

Algeria’s Sonatrach and Sonelgaz, Germany’s VNG, Italian company SNAM and Verbund Green Hydrogen from Austria all signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to jointly conduct studies for the project.

H2 View understands that the initiative will produce green hydrogen in Algeria to supply the European market via the SouthH2 Corridor. The 3,300km pipeline could deliver 40% of Europe’s imported hydrogen demand in 2030.

The project in Algeria is expected to potentially meet Europe’s green energy needs while also strengthening its position as a major hydrogen supplier.

In February, Germany and Algeria announced it would establish a hydrogen task force to set up hydrogen infrastructure and production.

The European Court of Auditors (ECA) revealed in July however, that the EU’s hydrogen production and import targets are “unrealistic” and is not on track to be achieved.

Despite €18.8bn of funding committed between 2021 and 2027, the report stated the European Commission did not undertake “robust” analyses before setting the 2030 targets of producing and importing a combined 20 million tonnes of green hydrogen.
