Air Liquide inaugurates 20MW German green hydrogen plant for pipeline supply

Air Liquide has inaugurated a 20MW PEM electrolyser plant at its Oberhausen site in Germany to supply industrial and mobility customers through its existing hydrogen pipeline.

Claimed to be the “largest” green hydrogen production plant in Germany, the site will has a capacity of up to 2,900 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year, using electrolyser stacks produced by the French industrial gas major’s joint venture with Siemens Energy.

The site will be connected to Air Liquide’s existing hydrogen pipeline to supply customers in the chemical, steel and mobility in industries.

Hendrik Wüst, Prime Minister of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, was present at the Oberhausen site for the inauguration.

He said, “Hydrogen is a key to a climate-neutral future, especially for energy-intensive industries such as steel and chemistry in North Rhine-Westphalia.

“The commissioning of the trailblazer electrolyser is an important sign for our industrial location and a milestone for climate protection in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is a central prerequisite for us to become the first climate-neutral industrial region in Europe.”

Gilles Le Van, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Air Liquide Germany, claimed the project shows “what can be achieved if authorities and companies work towards a common goal.”

The Chairman added, “Integration into an existing hydrogen infrastructure will accelerate the decarbonisation of key industries in North Rhine-Westphalia and promote low-carbon mobility in this densely populated region.”

Last year, Statkraft announced it would supply Air Liquide with wind power for the Oberhausen production site. The Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) certified the hydrogen produced as renewable, achieving full REDII-compliance.
