AECOM to deliver the technical design for bp’s Aberdeen hydrogen hub

Infrastructure consulting firm AECOM has been selected to deliver the technical design for scalable green hydrogen production at the Aberdeen Hydrogen Hub in Scotland.

Being delivered by bp Aberdeen Hydrogen Energy Limited (bpAHEL), a joint venture (JV) between bp and the Aberdeen City Council, is expected to begin hydrogen production in 2026. The JV made a final investment decision on the hub back in July (2024).

AECOM will support the development of the hub’s first phase, in which a green hydrogen production facility powered by a solar farm will be built, along with a refuelling facility for buses and trucks.

The firm’s team will manage all interfaces between the four work contractors, leading the safety of design activities, compliance with CDM regulators, and ensuring that all planning and license conditions are appropriately discharged.

Additionally, AECOM will lead and coordinate all external stakeholder communications necessary to deliver the project.

Eloise John, Director of Energy for UK & Ireland at AECOM, claimed she is delighted to help provide critical infrastructure for Aberdeen’s energy transition.

“Through this contract with bpAHEL, we are supporting the growth of a new generation of green skilled workers and helping to transition local jobs and supply chains to ensure the city is ready to take full advantage of the global energy transition and the economic opportunities it will bring to Aberdeen and the wider region.”

Previously, AECOM has worked with Air Products, Shell and Plug Power to help ensure their hydrogen projects reach FID.

Speaking to H2 View last year (2023), Sam Mackilligin, Hydrogen Lead at AECOM in Europe, said, “FID is the process whereby the project owner makes their investment decision with or without the assistance of external funders. Projects are not getting to that point in the hydrogen space at the moment.”
