Accelera™ by Cummins has successfully commissioned its first hydrogen fuel cell-powered locomotive for freight rail applications as part of HY2RAIL.
The Austrian project saw typical diesel generators replaced with Accelera’s fuel cells to serve as the primary power unit in the conversion project of a light On Track Machine (OTM) vehicle.
m.ZERO powered the train by integrating Accelera’s fuel cell power modules into a 120kW system, before overseeing the installation of all balance-of-plant components and interfaces. The fuel cell system was then combined with a battery system to create hybrid propulsion including power electronics, onboard hydrogen storage tech and a vehicle control unit.
