Accelera sets Guinness World Record for longest hydrogen truck journey

Accelera by Cummins has set a new Guinness World Record for the longest distance travelled by a hydrogen fuel cell electric (FCEV) heavy-duty truck without refuelling.

The H2Rescue truck, a Kenworth T370 prototype designed for emergency response missions, completed a 1,806-mile journey in California, the US, on a single fill last Friday (October 25).

The vehicle is powered by an Accelera fuel cell engine and a 250kW traction motor and consumes around 168kg of hydrogen whilst travelling between 50-55mph.

The Class 7 heavy-duty vehicle is the result of a collaboration between Accelera, the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T), the US Department of Energy (DOE) and the US Department of Defence (DoD).

“This world record is a triumph for interagency collaboration and proof that hydrogen is a viable alternative fuel for vehicles,” claimed Nicholas Josefik, Industrial Engineer at the US Army Engineer Research and Development Centre.

“By using hydrogen, we can improve our nation’s energy security and reliability,” Josefik added.

In 2021, Toyota achieved a Guinness World Record title for the longest distance a hydrogen FCEV passenger car travelled without refuelling, some 845 miles in southern California.
