Accelera opens 500MW PEM electrolyser factory in Spain

Accelera by Cummins has opened a 500MW PEM electrolyser factory in Spain as the US-headquartered firm expands manufacturing capacity in Europe.

Located in Guadalajara, Castilla-La Mancha, near Madrid, the 260,000ft2 site will produce the firm’s 5MW HyLYZER®-1000 PEM systems and could be scaled to 1GW of manufacturing capacity in the future.

The zero-emissions business segment of Cummins said the plant also produces 70% of its own energy demand from 3,000 rooftop solar panel and 100 geothermal points for heating and cooling.

Furthermore, the company says the facility could create 150 jobs in the regions, which could grow to 200 as production increases.

“The opening of our new electrolyser manufacturing plant in Europe is a significant milestone for Accelera and a crucial step in advancing global decarbonisation efforts,” said Amy Davis, President of Accelera.

President of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, also praised the development. He said the plant would put the region on the “medium- and long-term economic map.”

It comes after Accelera started operations of its 500MW electrolyser factory in Minnesota, US, last May.

The long-standing original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in 2022 also said it would be scaling its PEM manufacturing capacity at its factory in Oevel, Belgium to 1GW, having gained support from the EU’s Important Project for Common European Interest (IPCEI).
