Today’s announcement from Abu Dhabi’s Mubadala strikes me as what could be one of the most significant statements of intent in hydrogen in 2021, at the very least in the first half of this year.
For many, the Middle East epitomises the fossil fuel-laden status quo of the energy world today. The region is largely front and centre of oil and gas and various derivatives.
We’ve seen the first seeds sown of an evolution in that thinking; various projects have taken shape in the Middle East and several big announcements have emanated from it as a result. Few will have resonated quite so strongly, however.
This is an oil-rich Emirate, arguably the country most at the forefront of the UAE (United Arab Emirates). It’s a bold partnership that speaks of not just building green hydrogen capabilities in Abu Dhabi, but ‘accelerating’ them. Further still, there are hints of ambition throughout the announcement; we know that the Middle East generally doesn’t do ‘low-key’ so there is every reason to believe the strong intent in this MoU will be met with action and more.
