Norsk e-Fuel, Prime Capital and RES will jointly develop an 80,000-tonne-per-year hydrogen-based sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) facility in Sweden.
Project Alby will produce green hydrogen which will be combined with captured CO2 to generate e-kerosene.
Following further development and construction of the 14-hectare site, Norsk e-Fuel has stated that operations will commence in line with the European ReFuelEU Aviation regulation, which mandates that at least 10% of aviation fuel must come from sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by 2030, with a target of up to 70% by 2050.
The facility is located around 370km north of Stockholm in the municipality of Ånge, meaning it will reportedly benefit from low electricity prices due to extensive renewable energy available in the region.
Last December, fund manager Prime Capital purchased the site from RES under its Prime Energy Infrastructure Fund II (PGEIF II).

As a result, Prime Capital and Norsk e-Fuel will be the project leaders, with RES also having an involvement. The funds invested by Prime Capital are backed by the EU via the InvestEU Fund.
“This collaboration brings together Norsk e-Fuel’s cutting-edge advancements in synthetic SAF development as well as RES’ exceptional capacities in delivering projects with Prime Capital’s extensive experience in renewable energy infrastructure and power-to-x project development,” said Jens Walzner, Managing Director of Prime Capital.
Norsk e-Fuel’s CEO, Karl Hauptmeier, added, “As part of our project portfolio, Project Alby not only exemplifies our commitment to reduce the CO2 emissions but also our belief that teamwork is crucial for success.”
The announcement comes shortly after Boeing made an undisclosed investment in Norse e-Fuel to support its SAF plans – representing four plants planned for the Nordics as of January 2025.

The aircraft giant hopes its investment will support the scaling of SAF production to meet EU mandates while also informing policy decisions to enable “the economic viability of the global SAF industry.
