$635m boost for hydrogen and EV infrastructure across 27 US states

The US Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has announced $635m in grants to accelerate the development of electric vehicle (EV) and hydrogen refuelling infrastructure.

H2 View understands that the grants will fund 49 projects implementing more than 11,500 EV charging ports and hydrogen and natural gas fuelling infrastructure along corridors. They will span 27 States, four federally recognised tribes and the District of Columbia.

The build-out of hydrogen refuelling infrastructure will support the nation’s goal of deploying zero-emission medium and heavy-duty vehicles to reduce diesel emissions.

Commenting on the grants, Gabe Klein, Executive Director of the Joint Office of Energy and Transportation, said, “Today’s investments supplement a combination of federal tax incentives, state and local funding, and private investment to fill gaps in the nation’s rapidly growing alternative fuelling network and ensure all communities – whether rural, urban or suburban – have access to convenient, reliable and affordable zero-emission transportation options.”

The Port Authority of Houston will receive around $24.8m to construct and operate a hydrogen fuelling station for heavy-duty trucks in Bayport, Texas, offering “high fuelling throughput, public accessibility and support for tube trailer fuelling.”

$18.6m will also be awarded to develop “alternative fuelling infrastructure” in Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The Maryland, West Virginia and Pennsylvania Departments of Transportation will develop the facilities in partnership with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

Last September, the Department of Energy (DOE) awarded up to $40m to support hydrogen refuelling projects in New York, Connecticut, California and Arizona.
