Imagine powering America’s industrial plants with nothing coming out of the smokestack aside, perhaps, from some water. That’s part of a long-held dream among proponents of a potential “hydrogen economy,” one that would replace or complement fossil fuels with energy from the first element in the periodic table.
The US Department of Energy (DOE) recently brought that vision closer, announcing a $750m investment in projects that will accelerate clean hydrogen production. This announcement underscores that renewable hydrogen requires clean blue water––which makes green hydrogen far more complicated than it might seem.
