It’s been an era-defining period for hydrogen in the US, following the awarding of hydrogen hubs funding. Whether as an off-shoot to the hydrogen policy momentum, or simply given the pressing decarbonisation timeframes, more utilities are embarking on projects that explore hydrogen’s grid and storage potential.
Florida Power & Light Company (FPL), for example, recently announced the first-of-its-kind pilot project reached a significant milestone with the production of hydrogen. FPL’s Cavendish NextGen Hydrogen Hub will help the company explore using clean hydrogen to offset the use of natural gas to run a traditional power plant. The pilot project draws on abundant water and solar to produce clean hydrogen through electrolysis.
Construction of the facility is expected to complete by the end of the year.
