As the world races towards Net Zero, switching to green hydrogen is becoming crucial. Green hydrogen production using electrolysis requires renewable electricity as well as water as a feedstock, making the latter a vital part of the hydrogen economy.
ound nine litres of water is required to produce 1kg of hydrogen via electrolysis. In the real world, however, the water requirement within an electrolyser is higher because the feedwater needs to be treated to electrolyser standards. This is also referred to as deionised water. As will be discussed, water is also required for system cooling, though this can be lower grade.
Water used in any electrolyser needs to be at least ASTM Grade II1 or equivalent. This prevents damage to the electrolyser membrane or diaphragm and the lifetime meets that stated by the manufacturer2.
