The growing presence of hydrogen for rail and road transportation in the US

The shift to greener, more sustainable fuels is rapidly accelerating across all sectors in the US. As transportation is one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the country – some 28%  – a trifecta of alternative energy sources is shaping the evolving mobility sector: hydrogen, liquids and electric batteries – each with its own set of challenges and opportunities.

While renewable diesel and biofuels are generally considered to be the most compatible with existing diesel engines, making them attractive for fleets looking to reduce their carbon footprint without substantial infrastructure changes, electric vehicles are currently dominating the zero-emission landscape for passenger cars and light-duty vehicles.

Meanwhile, hydrogen is showing great promise, particularly for rail and road transport. It is gaining traction thanks to the potential to drastically reduce GHG emissions and provide an energy-dense, long-lasting fuel source.
