It was 1997 that Randy MacEwen first took an interest in hydrogen and fuel cells. He was working as a lawyer in Toronto, Canada at the time, and one of his clients was an electrolyser company called Stuart Energy Systems Corporation.
“I took that company public on October 5, 2000. I remember it like it was yesterday,” MacEwen, President and CEO of Ballard Power Systems, recalled to H2 View. “It was the moment I realised we had this sunrise opportunity to decarbonise, and I wanted to move to an industry that was going to disrupt.”
In 2001, MacEwen joined Stuart Energy but his tenure there was short, only staying for four years.
