It’s been quite the three days here in Rotterdam for the World Hydrogen Summit and Exhibition. In many ways it felt like most large hydrogen events: excitement, busy and a lot of optimism.
However, this one was different. Across the summit’s sessions, discussions on the exhibition floor and throughout interviews, a sense of reality was conveyed that I have been yet to experience in hydrogen. And it was conveyed in a very public way.
That dawning reality is quite simply that hydrogen has not evolved in the way many had anticipated.
This was apparent right from the get-go. Ivo Bols, President of Europe and Africa at Air Products, in his keynote speech on the very first morning of the event told attendees hydrogen had fallen short of expectations.
