The approval issue facing hydrogen in maritime

Hydrogen’s role in decarbonising the maritime industry is becoming ever more pronounced with looming climate targets edging closer for shipping players. However, just how it will play its role has become an increasingly more prevalent point of contention.

Norwegian-based classification society DNV, in its 2021 Pathway to Net Zero Emissions report said that hard-to-abate sectors such as maritime, will still be net emitters by 2050, even if they scale up the introduction of greener technologies1.

Despite the potential of the industry taking longer to decarbonise than desired, DNV estimates that hydrogen and its derivatives such as ammonia, methanol and e-kerosene will play a key role in decarbonising heavy transport including maritime, although noting uptake will only scale in late 2030s, predicting the uptake of ammonia and e-fuels in the 2040s for long-range shipping2.
