Take 5: An interview with… Emmanouil Kakaras, EVP of NEXT Energy Business at MHI

Emmanouil, thanks for taking five with H2 View. We understand you’re heading up the new MHI-EMEA branch in Duisburg, Germany where the team will focus on the growth of MHI’s energy transition related business. Why don’t you tell us about this and the role MHI sees for hydrogen here?

Thank you. Yes, Europe and the wider EMEA region has been a key driver behind the global race to achieving net-zero targets, so it is great to expand our activities at the very heart of the energy transition. Our team in Duisburg brings together MHI Group’s expertise along the entire hydrogen value chain and broader decarbonisation technologies like Carbon Capture & Utilisation

At MHI Group, we have long understood the potential of hydrogen. We believe that hydrogen plays a fundamental role in achieving net-zero ambitions – as a storage medium for renewable energy and a fuel to decarbonise those sectors of the economy that are hard to electrify, such as heavy industries and transport.

It is in this area of industrial decarbonisation that we see the highest potential for hydrogen. Industries like steel, cement and refineries already feel the pressure from increasing CO2 cost and hydrogen offers a viable route to decarbonise. These industries will team up with suppliers and this combination of offtakers and suppliers will be the winning combination. I’m delighted to say we are involved in a number of projects, including the Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub that we are working on together with Vattenfall, Shell and Waerme Hamburg, which ties production of green hydrogen to a variety of industrial off-takers in its vicinity to enable a full hydrogen based ecosystem.
