Holthausen Clean Technology made headlines in 2017 when it converted a battery-electric Tesla Model S into a hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV). Dubbed Project Hesla, the Dutch firm removed the battery pack and replaced it with hydrogen fuel tanks and a fuel cell system, increasing the range of the car in the process.
More recently, the team has been in the news for its partnership with Hyzon Motors, Hyzon Motors Europe. Leading the joint venture is Max Holthausen, CEO of Hyzon Motors Europe.
In addition to the first hydrogen-powered Tesla, Max and the team have created some of the first hydrogen-powered sweepers, vans and trucks in the European market. From its production facility in Winschoten, the Netherlands, Max is now leading Hyzon Motors Europe as it aims to ship thousands of hydrogen heavy-duty vehicles. Hyzon’s largest production site globally, the Winschoten facility opened in March 2021 and has a capacity of up 500 trucks per year.
