Around halfway into talking to Steven Elliott, Senior Director, Triconex Safety and Critical Control for Schneider Electric, our discussion turns to time. Not in the context of encroaching Net Zero targets, as important as they are, but hydrogen production in a broader long-term context.

“These facilities are going to be there for decades. I had an old boss who told me ‘whatever you do, don’t build something you can’t operate, maintain, sustain and support’. You need to use partners and providers who have that lifetime knowledge.”

In the rush to embrace hydrogen, it’s an important element which can be overlooked, and it’s why the interplay between technology and time is so critical to bear in mind from the outset.

“You need to have the technology, the product and service – you have to know what it takes in terms of expertise, and for as long as it takes,” he said.
