It’s summer in Australia and along with long hot days and warm nights, across the country the ‘click’ of barbeques being lit can be heard from the cities to the outback. The great BBQ tradition is alive and well, but is it time for this tradition to evolve?
For some time now, there has been changes on the menu from the traditional meat-based barbeque to options including seafood, vegetables and plant-based alternatives. Our taste buds are happy and our overall healthy options improving, but what about the health of the environment?
In Australia, majority of home barbeques are run on LPG gas cylinders and also natural gas connected to through the home. A standard, two-burner LPG barbeque will consume 298 grams of gas when run on full for a 30-minute grill, releasing 890 grams of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. So while our eating habits are becoming healthier, how do we make our barbeques healthy as well?
