The US Department of Energy’s (DOE) map of hydrogen refuelling stations (HRS) currently shows a vast empty wilderness between the west and east coasts, with no refuelling facilities for thousands of miles in between.
Across the pond in Europe the picture is similar. Currently, we have to look to the Far East for established HRS networks.
But this is all set to change. The motor industry is pushing ahead with hydrogen vehicles, with BMW CEO Oliver Zipse, reported as emphasising how hydrogen engines will play an important part in the near future. Governments are responding with hugely ambitious plans to make long-distance hydrogen-fuelled journeys a reality.
This all points to an entire network of HRSs to meet the needs of industry and consumer alike. Across several continents governments are committing serious funds to develop HRS networks that will encourage confidence in the purchase of hydrogen vehicles.
