Much of the headline policy development in hydrogen has been focused on Europe and North America. However, Asia is positioning itself as a major driving force of the emerging industry, with powerhouse nations such as Japan, China, South Korea and India unveiling incentives and policy frameworks to accelerate hydrogen’s uptake.
With the Asia Pacific (APAC) region’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions accounting for more than half of global emissions, 45 of the 51 countries in APAC have Net Zero targets. Despite this backdrop, national policies across Asia focus on emissions reductions, but few countries have developed national hydrogen strategies or policies to support the incorporation of low-carbon hydrogen products in the energy mix.
The first country in Asia – and the world – to adopt a national hydrogen strategy was Japan, in 2017. Since then, China (2020, 2022), South Korea (2021), Singapore (2022), Malaysia (2023), India (2023), and Vietnam (2024) and more have taken this important first step.
