Australia’s efforts to secure hydrogen champion status have gone into overdrive. Driven by a climate-focused federal election campaign underway at the time of writing, this year has seen an unprecedented frenzy of hydrogen activity across the country.
While well overdue, Australia’s two major parties are now firmly getting behind hydrogen mobility. The integral role fuel cell vehicles will play in the decarbonised transport mix is finally being acknowledged with a particular focus on heavy-duty vehicles and some substantial dollars to back it up.
Whatever the result of the Australian election, over the past 12 months it’s become clear a golden moment for the hydrogen mobility sector is emerging. With a pipeline of programmes, projects and increasingly eager fleet operators in the mix, now is an opportune time for industry players to seriously consider this market more closely and determine their strategy to take advantage of the opportunities ahead.
The key prospect for the hydrogen mobility roll-out is crystalising around the development of a hydrogen refuelling network along Australia’s east coast. First pitched as an idea by Hyundai in 2014, the concept has finally gained government buy-in with genuine focus and funds to realise its execution.
