It’s been quite the four months since H2 View’s last European-focused Policy Pillar. National elections have taken place across various EU member states and a new European Parliament has been formed.
Whilst there’s undoubtedly been progress, two tones of concern are radiating from the European hydrogen industry: geopolitical competition and the threat of political shifts on the implementation of the bloc’s climate goals.
In the time since our March issue, the winners of the first European Hydrogen Bank (EHB) auction have been announced. Seven projects in few geographies secured a combined €700m ($757m) of subsidies – offering less than €0.5/kg ($0.54/kg) of green hydrogen produced, clearly placing bets on projects leveraging the bloc’s cheapest renewable energy.
