Fiber Patch Placement (FPP) is offering hydrogen tank producers an opportunity to dramatically reduce net fibre consumption and in turn, weight and material costs, while retaining mechanical properties.
German FPP company Cevotec partnered with a tank manufacturer, winding equipment provider Roth Composite Machinery and composite engineering service provider CIKONI to explore and demonstrate the effect of FPP technology on composite tanks.
The solution reduces the amount of carbon fibre needed for a composite hydrogen tank by locally reinforcing its dome areas, via a fully automated industrial process which can be combined with established wet or towpreg winding equipment.
Set to reduce net fibre consumption by around 15% or more – depended on the vessel’s characteristics – the four partners have said the solution can offer considerable weight and material cost savings while maintaining equivalent mechanical properties,
