In a world full of Hy-prefix companies, Oort Energy certainly stands out from the crowd. CEO Nick Van Dijk tells H2 View the inspiration came from Jan Hendrik Oort who made significant contributions to the understanding of the Milky Way and was a pioneer in radio astronomy (he died in 1992 aged 92).
Perhaps less well known is the Dutch astronomer’s knowledge of the hydrogen spectrum and the universe – which resonated with the two-year-old electrolyser start-up company based in Bristol, UK. “We live science and technology as much as we do it for a job,” said Van Dijk. “There’s kind of an astronomical theme that runs through our whole product – our commercial stack is called ‘Venus’, and the first trial was ‘Mercury’.”
